Today we are taking a look at the low end of the Beyerdynamic gaming lineup, in our Beyerdynamic MMX 100 gaming headset review. I love to play games with friends and family, or just me on the couch at home. Of course as any gamer will tell you, a quality headphone if one must have item for our toolbox. Let’s see if the MXX 100 stacks up and deserves a spot in the gaming session.
Overview
These MMX 100 and 150 are wired gaming headsets with simple features. The headphones have two colors, gray and white that share many similarities. It would be easy to explain what differentiates them most specifically by their connectivity to an Internet device. The MXX 100-level uses an analog 2.5-mm jack while the MXX 150 uses USB-A connections and can also connect 3.5 mm cables to consoles. Design, comfort, sound and microphone are virtually identical.
The MXX is a closed back, wired gaming headset that features 40 mm beyerdynamic drivers and a detachable microphone. These are the same drivers that are included in the MXX 150s. They refer to the mic as a “META VOICE microphone” but we will dive into mic quality in our review of the MXX 100.
A Look Inside the Box
The MXX 100 comes inside a standard box that is sturdy. The box for this wired gaming headset has graphics and an image of the headset itself. Overall a nice premium presentation. But no matter, inside is a foam casing surrounding the headset with the mic also visible. So far, everything looks like a premium gaming headset.
Inside the box we find all the included accessories. Detachable mic, 1.2 m analog cable and a 2 m analog cable. The cords are nothing special and 1.2 m in length.
Compatibility
The MMX 100 is compatible with both the PS5 and XBOX via plugging in directly into the console controllers. It does not feature the ability to connect to a PlayStation via USB like the MMX 150. The 3.5 mm plug should work with any 3.5 mm audio output such as your phone or other mobile devices as well.
For PC this analog gaming headset you can use the 3.5 mm connection similar to PS5 and XBOX. It’s also possible to utilize a 2-meter PC cable if your PC has separate mic and headset connectors. The Beyerdynamic MXX 150 goes a step further and offers a USB connection mode to connect the headset is desired. This has some additional functions such as noise cancellation to block background noise, the ability to hear what’s going on outside, and the ability to adjust volume.
Overall, you should have no issues with connectivity of these wired gaming headsets on pc or on your gaming console.
Beyerdynamic MMX 100 Gaming Headset Review
Now that we have touched on the basics, let’s dig into this gaming headsets features and see if it is worthy of your consideration.
Microphone and connectivity
The Beyerdynamic MMX 100 is designed for most game systems and works in a simple and straightforward way. It’s a cabled headset with a removable 3.5-mm cable and should be suitable for any headset with a headphone connector.
It does not have many extra features but is straight forward and easy to use. The gaming range of Beyerdynamic is free of wireless connection, but when upgrading from MMX 150 it offers USB connectivity with Beyerdynamic Augmented mode. The microphone emits sound that helps us to hear our conversations better. MMX 100 strips all this back. Extra features include a switch to disable microphone (aka separate mute button) and a practical volume dial.
Design
The MMX 100 looks similar to the MMX 150 in design and sound profile. Again to note, the MXX 150 can be used either via a USB-A connection or a TRR-compatible cable for controlling and using mobile devices or computers.
Both headsets offer similar designs with identical colors. On 150s the microphone mute button has been removed and the mic can, however, be silenced through the multifunction dial rather than pressing the button. As you can see below, the volume control is easily accessible so you do not waste time searching for the button controls.
Ear cushions, mic and wires can all be replaced and are interchangeable with the MMX 150. It is expected that spare parts for these will soon be available.
Comfort
We had no complaints with the Beyer MMX 100 in terms of comfort or fit. The sophisticated design allowed us to adjust the fit across my partners and mine different head shape (yes, I have been known to have a rather large head). The cans felt pressed into my ears a bit so it was a bit tiring during long games. I could wear it for hours while playing but I noticed and thought about it often. For my partner with a normal sized head, no complaints from their end even after several different rounds of of long sessions wearing the headphones.
The overall durability of the headset, mic and two cables seemed well made on the beyerdynamic mmx 100 gaming headset. The fact that the pads, microphone and cords are replaceable and interchangeable was great to see as most gaming headsets do not offer this flexibility.
The ear cups were not the most comfortable I have ever worn and did not compare to the comfort level of our top gaming cans, the SteelSeries Arctis 7P. Of course the price is very different as well so not really comparing apples to apples. Overall, the foam padding inside the earcups feels soft, but the soft padding in combination with the low density padding seemed to provide good fit for long gaming sessions.
Audio performances
Beyerdynamic’s Mx100 uses a dynamic 40mm driver. This immediately demonstrates that Beyerdynamic uses different drivers than its somewhat comparable studio headphones from Beyerdynamic. The DT770 uses a 45 ms driver while the DT240 Pro has a 42 mm driver.
We gave the headset some tests using some popular, fast-paced fps games in addition to some MMOs. We have given a breakdown of our thoughts across the frequency range including, bass, midrange, and treble.
Bass
The bass was the one big drawback we found with the headset. The bass is not as strong and only lacks some punch to be usable for bass heavy games like bass-heavy MOBAs, first-person shooters and MOBA games. It is definitely there but it requires a somewhat aggressive amount of boosting to get a good sound stage with deep bass.
Putting on some tunes, we found a similar lack of bass quality and it got our hopes down about the headset. This is not to say that bass does not exist, but it lacks the quality we have experienced in other headsets.
Midrange
The mid range was definitely better than the lows. The midrange is there and the headset offers nice sound stage overall. You will hear all parts of music or dialogue clearly and it is not too overwhelming. It is very clear in the background and would benefit from being louder.
Treble
The treble on the Beyerdynamic mmx was spot on for a gaming headphone in this price range. We often find in other headsets the treble can be a tad fatiguing over long gaming sessions, but this was not the case. The treble was there, clear and crisp and never fatigued our ears or caused discomfort. In most cases, I found our thumbs needed a break before my ears.
Overall the MMX 100 featured a powerful audio performance that would put it up there with our other top gaming headsets under $100.
Microphones
The MMX 100’s mic sounds great when using it in game. It appears there’s some presence on the Voice. It has a level volume with a clear, crisp tone. It’s clear and loud, and it’s simple to place it such that no breath sounds are heard.
Since sounds that are further away from the microphone aren’t picked up as well, keyboard noises aren’t an issue. The MMX 100 will not be mistaken for a broadcast mic, but it’s more than adequate for gaming and making phone calls all day.
What is it like to use the Beyerdynamic MMX 100?
The Beyerdynamic MMX100 is an incredibly simple headset for games. It’s a wired can with a removable boom microphone that performs outside of it’s price range. The MMX 100 is solid in construction. The earpads & headband cushion are made from foam and should be comfortable for most gamers. It does have a tight fit but the thick earpads are comfortable and the hinges allow easy movement without strain. The button placement of the volume dial is great and adjusting or muting the volume is simple and stress free. In reality, it’s pretty easy to use a headset.
How is gaming with the Beyerdynamic MMX 100?
The Beyerdynamic MMX100 delivers a good gaming experience. It is comfortable enough that you can play it for several hours without worrying about a short charge. However, this single TRRS cable is quite short for a few things other than console control. Due to the durability, it should handle multiple rage quits without harm or damage.
Beyerdynamic MMX 100 vs MMX 150 Differences
The Beyerdynamic MMX 150 is often mistaken for the MMX 100. They feature the same design and have interchangeable ear pads, mic and cords. The defining difference is the MMX 150 uses the analog USB-C output instead. The USB mode offers noise cancellation along with the addition of augmented mode.
In augmented mode, the sound of your surroundings is piped into your headphones or true wireless earphones, similar to how passthrough audio works on Bluetooth headphones and earbuds. We also found the MMX 150 did deliver a stronger bass that was missing in the MMX 150.
Other Alternatives
Outside of the MMX lineup, you may want to consider the Corsair HS70 Pro for a wireless option or the Razer BlackShark V2 or HyperX CloudX Stinger Core as a wired options. They rank high on our top gaming headsets under $100. Any of these will probably suit your needs quite well.
Does the Beyerdynamic MMX 100 block noise?
The Beyerdynamic MMX 100’s isolation performance isn’t really noteworthy; it’s what we would expect from a closed-back headphone without active noise cancellation . The clatter of dishes in another room should be a little more difficult to hear with this attenuation, but other sounds such as conversations and doorbells shouldn’t be affected too much in a residential situation.
We did find the Beyerdynamic MMX 100 does a good job at keeping sound escaping to the outside, so your significant other or roommate should not have to hear your gaming session.
Should you buy the Beyerdynamic MMX 100?
The MMX 100 is a good buy for the price if you are not concerned about accurate sound reproduction on the low end. Those seeking a precise bass response will need another alternative but it will be hard to find without going up in price. Although the bass output is a bit disappointing, it does offer a great balance in the other frequencies and the comfort is solid
The Beyerdynamic MMX 100 is a fun gaming headset for gaming that can also be used for zoom calls and light music listening. It works everywhere and the microphone sounds excellent for the price.

Technically, you can buy Dolby Atmos-enabled headsets, but you can utilize Dolby Access on any headset to get Dolby Atmos sound.
Can I use the MMX 100 for Studio Work?
We would not recommend the Beyerdynamic MMX 100 headset for studio applications. A better choice would be the Beyerdynamic DT-770 for tracking or the Beyer open-back DT 990 for mixing. You could also up your price range and look into the Sennheiser HD660 S if you were just looking for a pure listening headphone.
